The Bismarck, the flagship of the German Navy, was the largest German warship alongside the Tirpitz and had a displacement of 50,900 t and a crew of 2,092. Put into service on August 24th, 1940, she set sail on May 18th, 1941 for Operation Rhine Exercise. However, together with the Prinz Eugen, it was discovered early on by British air reconnaissance. When the Hood met, it was sunk by the Bismarck on May 24, 1941. After a long chase, she was hit by an aircraft torpedo on May 26, 1941 and was captured by the British battleships King George V and HMS Rodney.
